In Solaris, you begin by flying across the surface of a planet, picking up the stranded soldiers and destroying all of the bad guys in your way. But it's way more complicated than that. Check your map, and fly to other planets, ridding the galaxy of the Zylon threat, while protecting your own planet from attack.
